A special plant: Duboisia bush
The active ingredient in Buscopan® and double strength Buscopan Forte® is extracted from the leaves of an Australian native tree, known as the Corkwood tree or Duboisia. Boehringer Ingelheim, the manufacturer of Buscopan®, is the world's leading producer of Duboisia, delivering 90% of the global requirement of the ingredient. Using sophisticated and environmentally-friendly farming methods, farmers in Australia and South America grow and harvest the small rainforest trees. The dried leaves are used to create the high-quality pharmaceutical product.
Duboisia and the development of Buscopan/Buscopan Forte®
In the search for a safe and effective treatment for stomach pain, Boehringer Ingelheim learnt from the healing arts of some of the world's oldest cultures. The Aborigines of Australia used Duboisia to relieve stomach pain. In the first half of the 20th century, Boehringer Ingelheim began work on developing a safe, medication that could reduce stomach pain. By 1951, the new medication was ready for commercial production and Buscopan® was launched. Today, with more than half a century of proven expertise in safe antispasmodic effectiveness, the market leader Buscopan® also has a double strength variant Buscopan Forte®, to treatment 'acute' stomach aches, cramps and discomfort.
